Giuseppe Chinzer is the composer of the fine G minor cello sonata first published in Paris in 1745 and featured first here in this collection. The second piece, in G major, is written by a man who played an active part in Parisian concert life as both a cellist and composer, Jean-Baptist Breval. It is no doubt a tounge-in-cheek set of variations on the English national anthem "God Save The King." And finally, the third is composed by Italian composer Bernardo Porta, a true cosmopolitan who was active in France and published his B flat sonata in London during the late 18th century. Edited by scholar Roger Parker and barouque cellist Susan Sheppard, these practical performing editions provide suggested ornamentations for the cello, and keyboard realizations that have been kept deliberately simple. Together, they offer an invaluable introduction to the literature of a period that saw a great flowering in the cello's development.
